01: Introduction
Collective investments include unit trusts, open-ended investment companies (OEICs) and investment companies (including authorised investment trusts). It is also possible to invest in life assurance based investments that are very similar to these types of collectives in many respects – although they differ in their tax treatment. It is important to remember that the value of investments and the income from them can go down as well as up, and past performance is not a guide to future performance. Investors can lose some or all of their money.
